Abstract
858,528. Differential gear; clutch control. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 7, 1958 [Oct. 18, 1957], No. 31948/58. Class 80 (2). A multiplate friction clutch 38 for locking the input crown wheel 32 of a motor-vehicle differential gear to one half shaft 10, is engaged by pressure liquid 62 supplied by a single stroke pump 56, fed, by gravity or otherwise, from the lubricant sump 54 of the differential gear itself, thereby avoiding possible contamination of the differential lubricant by any extraneous operating fluid. The pump 56 is operated, to engage the clutch, by opening a valve 68 to energize a compressed air diaphragm motor 67 linked to the pump piston. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the pump 56 and motor 67 are combined in a differential piston forming an intensifier, and oil is supplied thereto from the sump through a non-return valve. In Fig. 3 (not shown), one set of clutch plates is splined to an extension,on the side wheel instead of the half shaft as in Fig. 1.
