Abstract

[Also in Group XVI] In a machine for wrapping a paper strip round a batch of collapsed cartons &c., feed of the strip is initiated by movement of the batch into the feed channel along which it is forwarded to the wrapping position. Batches 13 are fed over a guide 17 to an intermittently rotating wheel 16 with adjustable pockets which deposits them on the base 12 of the feed channel to be forwarded by a reciprocating pusher 27. Each batch may be secured by a single strip, the ends of which overlap and are adhesively joined, but in the embodiment described a short length of additional strip overlaps and joins the ends of the main strip. The main strip 31 has a heat responsive sealing surface and is fed downwards by rollers 35, 36, profiled to bend it to V section, the roller 35 being rotated through gears 38, 39 and pawl and ratchet mechanism, by vertical movement of a rack 44 under the influence of a weight 45. The rack 44 abuts at its lower end an arm 46 maintained in an upper position by a trip lever 25 engaging the end 51 of a lever 49. When a batch 13 is deposited on the base 12, it depresses a lever 18 which through linkage 21, 24 moves the lever 25 permitting the arm 46 and thus the rack to descend. The descent of the rack feeds the strip 31. As the strip 31 descends it passes adjacent the end of the second strip 61 and at the end of its travel a heater 60 seals it to the strip 61 and a cutter 53 severs it. It is engaged by the advancing batch and wrapped round three sides of it, a cutter 63 severing the strip 61. A vertically reciprocating finger 69 folds one end of the strip about the batch and a combined heater and folder 77 descends to fold in the other end with its sealing strip and secure the latter to the first end. A cam 52 raises the arm 46 and rack 44 and permits the trip lever 25 to reset.
