Abstract

Class 20(1) [Also in Group XIII] A crop drier comprises a storage bin having cylindrical pervious walls 1, an axial pervious walled ventilating tube 2 open to the atmosphere at the top; and a fan 4 which can be supported at different heights within the tube. The fan forms part of a unit including an electric motor 3, a heating element 5 and a sealing ring 11. Air is drawn from above the unit, heated and then expelled radially through tube walls. The unit can be raised and lowered by means of a winch 9 or, alternatively, a pulley and counter weight are used and a tell tale provided outside the bin for indicating the position of the fan. In a modified unit, a butterfly valve capable of closing the ventilating tube may be fitted to a sub-frame fixed to the heater casing. By closing the valve and adjusting the height of the unit the fan air output may be concentrated at any particular level. The fan is preferably of the reversible type. The pervious walls 1 may be made from expanded metal, or hessian or wire woven cloth supported within a wire cage and the tube 2 may be made from sheet metal punched with longitudinal slots.
