Abstract
855,777. Making turbine and like blades; extruding. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Feb. 10, 1959 [Feb. 10, 1958], No. 4334/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVI] A turbine or compressor blade, Fig. 10, having axial passageways 12, 27, 28 for a heating or cooling fluid such as air, is made by drilling holes 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 20 in a billet 10 with at least two of the holes 11, 16, 20 overlapping, filling the holes, extruding the billet with lubrication to form a blade section of aerodynamic shape, whereby the holes are elongated, and subsequently removing the filler. The billet may be of nickel-chrome alloy plated with nickel. Blind holes 11, 12, 13 are drilled first and the holes 11, 13 filled with mild steel. Overlapping holes 16, 17, 20 are then drilled and filled together with holes 12. Alternatively all the holes are drilled and then filled. Hardened inserts 33-35, Fig. 12 (not shown), may be used to facilitate drilling the overlapping holes. The nickel-plated billet is lubricated with graphite during extrusion as described in Specification 828,339. The filler is subsequently removed, the blade provided with a root and root platform and a tip platform, and holes drilled through the root to meet the cooling passageways.
