Class 123(1) A liquid-level gauge comprises a float 17 which is guided by adjustable wires 96, 97 in a tank 13 and is connected by a metal gauging tape 16, passing through sheave mountings 84, 92, a vibration inducing unit 19 and guide tubes 18, to a tape drum 24 which is rotatably mounted on a shaft 26 in a housing 22 fixed by a bracket 12 to the tank 13. The vibration inducing unit 19, which is adapted to agitate the tape 16 rapidly to overcome friction existing between it and the drum 24 and the sheave mountings 84, 92 so that accurate liquid level recordings can be obtained, comprises a plate 104 which is accommodated in a casing 78 and carries pins 102, 103 arranged on opposite sides of the tape 16. The plate 104, urged by a spring 109 in an anti-clockwise direction away from the tape 16, is rotatably mounted on a stud 106 screwed into a base plate 107 bolted to the casing 78. Permanent magnets 113, 114 mounted on opposite ends of the member 104 are influenced by a permanent horse-shoe magnet 119 mounted on the shaft of an electric motor 116 which is carried by posts 117, 118 secured to the base 107 and is supplied with power through leads 126. Before taking a level reading the motor 116 is switched on so that, due to the magnetic coupling, the pins 102, 103 oscillate and repeatedly vibrate the tape 16. The motor may be rotated mechanically, or by hand, and the number of poles on the magnet may be increased. The magnets 113, 114 may alternatively be replaced by soft iron. In another arrangement the vibration is produced by two jets of air spaced apart to engage opposite sides of the tape. A fixed fulcrum may be placed near one side of the tape so that forces can be recurrently applied on the other side at points spaced from the fulcrum. Alternatively two fixed fulcrum points can be used the force then being applied between them on the other side of the tape. In a further modification rapid vibrations are applied to the guide pipes. The vibration unit may be controlled remotely.
