854,902. Machinery guards. PROJECTILE & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., GASPAR, E., and SWINBOURNE, G. K. Aug. 7, 1957; [Aug. 7, 1956], No. 24215/56. Class 80 (4). In an injection moulding or like machine, wherein a guard 17 is horizontally movable on bars 15, 16 by a piston-rod 22 of a fluidpressure system interlocked, by means not shown, with the movable platen 13 of the machine to ensure a sequential operation of the guard and platen, the guard 17 carries flexible means such as a trip wire 30 so that should the guard-closing be obstructed (e.g. by an operator's arm) the wire 30 is deflected and actuates means to stop the guard. As shown, the wire 30 extends between a bracket 31 and a spring- loaded lever 27 carrying a pawl engageable with a fixed rack 25. In a modification the lower end of the wire 30 is attached to a friction clip, Fig. 2 (not shown), holding a pawl suspended above a fixed rack, deflection of the wire causing the' clip to open and drop the pawl into engagement with the rack. In a further modification the trip-wire 30 is connected to a switch or valve controlling the guard-closing cylinder 23. The cylinder 23 is controlled by a solenoid-operated valve 24. In the machine shown the platen 13 is moved by an hydraulic ram towards a fixed platen 14 provided with plasticizing and injection mechanism. Operation of a push-button causes closure of the guard 17 which when closed operates a valve to start the closure of the platen 13. In turn, the closing platen operates a valve to start the injection process. After injection, and if necessary after a time delay, the platen 13 and guard 17 commence to open, the guard movement being slowed by an air restriction so that the platen is fully open before the guard. When the guard is fully open it connects the pump of the platen hydraulic supply to exhaust.
