Abstract

843,641. Oil burners. SMITH, C. H. May 20, 1958 [May 29, 1957], No. 17078/57. Class 75(1). In an oil burner having an air tube 14 carried on the fuel tube 8 fitted with the atomizing nozzle 9. the two being bodily adjustable relatively to the burner mouth 3 a quick shutting off or opening of the oil flow to the nozzle 9 is effected by placing the shut-off valve within the fuel tube 8 and closely adjacent to the nozzle 9 the operating stern 35 for the valve being extended to a control at the remote end of the burner body; the oil supply and discharge pipes 27, 28 are connected to the fuel tube at such remote end and outside the burner body. The shut off valve may be a needle valve or a neoprene pad provided at the inner end of the stem 35 to close down on the seating 36 the aperture of which is many times greater than the discharge aperture of the nozzle so facilitating separating out of air bubbles in the oil supply. The fuel tube 8 has fixed thereto a hemi-spherical head 13 on which the air tube 14 is relatively angularly adjustable to vary the effective area of air entry ports into the interior of the air tube these variable air entry ports being provided by the partial registration of inter-castellation apertures 23 on the top rim of the air tube with those of a depending flange 15 on the hemispherical head 13. This turning adjustment is effected by slightly turning the top cover 2 of the burner on its cylindrical body portion 1 as permitted by the screw and slot connection 26, it being noted that turning of the air tube 14 is prevented by a key piece 21 fixed on the burner body portion 1. Axial adjustment of the air tube and nozzle relatively to the coned exit end 3 of the burner is effected by an internally screwed hand wheel 12 (or toothed or worm wheel) which raises or lowers the fuel tube 8, rotation of the latter being prevented by the oil inlet and discharge pipes 27, 28 which are fixed to the fuel tube 8 and restrained against turning movement in the horizontal plane by their extending through a vertical slotting 29 in a boss 10 on the burner top 2. The air is supplied by a fan to a tangential inlet 31 to the burner part passing to the interior of the air tube and past the nozzle 9 and part passing outside the air tube where it passes over helical vanes 32 to reach the burner mouth 4. The control means for operating the valve stem 35 is a bellows which collapses upwards when the oil pressure is set up by closing a valve in the oil discharge pipe 28, this may be effected by remote control e.g. electrically.
