843,008. Lifting-dogs with automatic control. SOMERS.Ltd., W. Jan. 2, 1958 [Jan. 2, 1957], No. 131/57. Class 78 (4). In lifting-dogs such as that described in Specification 642,100, in which a latching bolt 3 is turned, each time the grab is raised or lowered, so that its head 2 is alternately positioned to enter or leave a slot 1 to lock the grab in its open position or to unlock it, it sometimes happens that the rotation of the dog 3 as the grab is lowered is insufficient to carry its transverse operating-pin past the corresponding apex on the rack-like cam 6, 7 by which the dog 3 is turned; this results in the dog being insecurely latched. To obviate this, according to the invention, the shapes of the head 2 and of its co-operating slot 1 are such that the head does not lodge in the slot unless the head has been turned through a minimum angle. In the construction illustrated the slot 1 is square and the flanks 2b of the arms 2a of the head are tangential to the central pin and inclined at about 20 degrees to the axis of the head.
