In a continuous rod cigarette making machine the cigarette paper prior to wrapping, is provided with a transverse row of perforations 30, Fig. 2, at positions such that they will be near the mouth end of the resulting cigarettes. In Fig. 2 the cigarette paper passes in sequence through printing, perforating, tipping, and wrapping means which provide the paper with printing 28, perforations 30, and double length tips 32. The perforating apparatus comprises rollers 42, 40, Fig. 3 with rows 48, 50, of perforating teeth and corresponding recesses, between which rolls the cigarette paper strip 44 passes. In Fig. 5 the strip 54 passes around a roller 58 co-operating with perforating and printing rollers 74, 60, the roller 58 having pads 78, 64, co-operating with the perforating and printing projections 76, 62. In a modification the roller 58 has a rubber surface and co-operates with a single roller which performs both the perforating and printing, the roller 58 rotating at different speed from the co-operating roller to avoid uneven wear of the surface of roller 58. The perforating projections pick up ink from the inking roller so that ink is also applied to the edges of the perforations.
