Abstract

840,950. Transducers. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 22, 1958 [Oct. 7, 1957], No. 30226/58. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] The movable core of a permanent magnet linear generator passes through two groups of pick-up coils 12, 14 on a non-magnetic former 10. The core may be moved axially by a rod 36, by differential fluid pressures applied to its ends, or by the two methods in combination. The coils are spaced by T-, L- or I-section rings 16 and are retained in a housing 26 by end-rings 18, 20, 22, 24, all the rings and the housing being of magnetic material. As shown, the movable core carries the permanent magnet 30 with polepieces 32, 34, but in an alternative arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown), the magnet is situated between the stator coil groups, the core being of magnetic material, e.g. a cobalt alloy. In either case, to reduce ripple, the core may have skewed endfaces or be of such a length that when one end is opposite a ring 16 the other is midway between two. The coils may be arranged asymmetrically to produce a non-linear relationship between velocity of movement and output voltage.
