846,048. Welding by fusion. QUASI-ARC Ltd. March 31, 1959 [April 10, 1958], No. 11429/58. Class 83 (4). In arc-welding a butt-joint using a powder backing, an even backing of powder is built up between the work and a powder support by intermittently feeding the powder longitudinally of the joint towards a barrier. The powder 10 is supported in a trough 1 having a barrier 9 at one end and a hopper 2 at the other and resting on a member 3 supported on links 4 and vibrated by an eccentric 5, a cam, or an electro-magnetic vibrator. In a modification, the trough 1 is secured to the work by clamps 18 with the interposition of say soft rubber sealing strips 16. The trough alone may be vibrated or the work may also be vibrated and the vibrations may be stopped or maintained during the welding. Gas shielded or flux submerged arc-welding or coated electrode welding may be used. The backing powder is a flux.
