A kitchen appliance driving unit has the motor suspended from a plate which can be arranged flush with a table or the equivalent thereof, the plate forming the top of a casing recessed into the .table and enclosing the unit. As shown, the shaft of the driven device can engage either the upper end of the motor shaft or be driven through a clutch 63-56 from gears 61, 59 and 58 meshing with teeth 57 on the motor shaft. The plate 11 which closes the housing 12 has an opening to enable the driven device to be coupled to the motor and another to receive the handle 15 of a rotary switch 70 which enables the motor speed to be varied.
