Abstract
839,153. Connecting rods. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND Ltd. Feb. 2, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958], No. 6053/58. Class 122 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] An hydraulic motor or valve comprises pistons 12, 13 capable of floating movement in opposed cylinders 10, 11 and having partspherical surfaces 121, 131 engaging the partspherical surface 14 of a member 141 mounted for pivotal movement about an axis off-set from the longitudinal axis of the pistons, each piston having a single band 16 incorporating a flexible joint-ring 17 sealing the piston in the cylinder, whereby the pistons are free to oscillate about transverse axes substantially coplanar with their respective joint-rings. In the application to a motor, the member 141 extends radially from a rod 15, which may be the flight-control member of an aerodyne, and the pistons are axially movable in the cylinders by fluid supplied to one or other of the cylinder by a valve 20, which may be automatically actuated by an electrically-operated relay, to pivot the member and hence rotate the rod 15. The single bands on the pistons, during the pivoting movement of the member 141, permit the pistons to oscillate about the transverse axes. In the alternative application to a valve the movement of the member 141 is imparted to the pistons which control ports provided in the cylinders.
