838,630. Lathes. HOLTSPUR ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Sept. 30, 1958 [Aug. 22, 1957], No. 26505/57. Class 83 (3). In a screw-cutting &c. lathe in which a toolholder 8 is mounted on a cross-feed slide 17 supported on the lathe-saddle (not shown), means 20 on the slide is carried by traverse of the saddle against an abutment 22 to retract the tool-holder relatively to slide 17. A plunger 6 operated by a double-acting pneumatic &c. cylinder 12 supports the tool-holder, and is mounted on a tool-post 3 on slide 17. A pair of resilient abutments 22, 23 are mounted on the tailstock 2. Screw-cutting in direction " X " is terminated when the end 20 of a valve-slide 30 contacts abutment 22 and re-sets valve 19, which then re-sets a further valve 13 on cylinder 12, by means of compressed air fed along lines 25, 27, 15. In this setting, valve 13 causes cylinder 12 to retract the tool, by compressed air from a line 14, until an abutment 10 on plunger 6 strikes mounting 4. Valve 19 may also arrest saddle traverse. At the end of the idle return stroke of the saddle, the other end (21) of the valve slide contacts abutment 23, reversing valves 19, 13 and returning the tool to its advanced position. The ends 20, 21 are of conical form so that as the cross-slide is fed to increase the depth of cut, saddle traverse is shortened. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of a lever-operated valve 19, and mechanical or electrical means for operating the tool holder 8.
