Abstract

838,528. Nuclear reactors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 24, 1958 [May 1, 1957], No. 13035/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a liquid cooled nuclear reactor, of the swimming pool type, the core is enclosed in a reactron permeable pressure vessel which is immersed in water. The latter provides the major neutron reflection and a high neutron flux region is developed near the outer surface of the pressure vessel, in the water, which forms a readily accessible region suitable for neutron test experiments. The flux level immediately outside the pressure vessel is of the same order of magnitude as that inside the core. Control is effected by rods movable vertically within the pressure vessel. Experiments may be conducted in tubes within the reactor core while external experiments are carried out either in a container or in cavities in a beryllium reflector both of which surround the pressure vessel. The materials used are ; pressure vessel, aluminium or zirconium; coolant and moderator, light water, light water with graphite or terphenyl ; fuel, U-235, U-233, and plutonium.
