Abstract

838,481. Flame desurfacing. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Sept. 4, 1958 [Sept. 5, 1957], No. 28374/58. Class 83 (4). In a process for thermochemically scarfing a work surface W by discharging a sheet-like stream of oxidizing gas at an acute angle to the surface, a stream of natural gas is discharged substantially parallel with the oxidizing gas stream to form therewith a post-mixed natural gas preheat flame. Oxygen is discharged from an elongated slot S and the natural gas from orifices P, F. Baffle strips 10, 12 are provided adjacent the orifices P, F to confine the outflowing natural gas substantially parallel to the oxygen stream. Alternatively baffle surfaces may be provided integral with the main orifice blocks.
