Abstract

Magnesium tetraboride is prepared by heating at 900-1200 DEG C. a mixture of magnesium and boron, a mixture of magnesium diboride and boron, or magnesium diboride alone, and extracting the product with dilute mineral acid, e.g. H2SO4, HCl, or HNO3, to remove MgB2, and leave MgB4, which is insoluble. In the two mixtures used there should be a stoichiometric deficiency of boron. In all three reactions the starting materials are briquetted, and the resulting briquettes are, in the first two reactions, heated in helium, and, in the last reaction, heated in vacuo to volatilize magnesium. The product of all three reactions is cooled in helium before extraction.
