837,573. Crimping fibres and yarns. BANCROFT & SONS CO., J. Nov. 18, 1957 [Dec. 24, 1956], No. 35909/57. Class 120(3) [Also in Group XI] Fibres, filament tows, yarns or threads are crimped and the crimp set while the fibres are confined between conveyer belts. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, fibres pass between rolls 10, 11 into a tube 30 forming a crimping chamber. From this they are discharged between conveyer belts 35, 36 and are drawn away through a tensioning device 55. Heaters 50 are disposed along the first portion of the setting chamber and prior to discharge from the belts the fibres are cooled. Instead of employing the heaters 50, the conveyers 35, 36 may be of wire mesh or parallel wires through which an electric current may be passed for heating. If pervious belts are employed, hot air, steam, or a liquid setting agent may be introduced to the fibres through the belts. One belt may be spaced away from the tube 30 to allow the fibres to open out slightly before being set. A further embodiment discloses two sets of belts for setting and cooling. In another form, Fig. 10, belts 110, 111 convey the fibres through a tank 116 containing hot water, a chemical setting agent, or a resin composition.
