Abstract
837,095. Coating webs. ILFORD Ltd. Nov. 24, 1958 [Dec. 16, 1957], No. 39100/57. Class 140. A process for coating a web 1, e.g. a photographic film base, with a plurality of layers 6, 7 comprises applying a coating liquid 17 from each of a plurality of stations spaced short distances apart, whereby the web 1 picks up liquid from each station in succession, the liquids after the first being applied to a liquid layer from the next preceding station, each liquid after the first being metered, e.g. by a gear pump, to the web 1 through a slot 13 extending across the web 1 and constituting at its station a bead of liquid 16 connecting the slot 13 and the web 1. Liquid is continuously supplied to and withdrawn from the bead 16. The web 1 preferably passes about a horizontal drum and the stations are preferably disposed about an upper rising quadrant of the drum. Each station comprises a head 8 having a jacket 9 through which a liquid at a controlled temperature is circulated to which is bolted a member 12 having the slot 13. The slot 13 may be 5 to 60 thousandths of an inch wide and spaced 5 to 60 thousandths of an inch from the web 1. The member 12 should be highly polished and all corners rounded. The lengths of slots 13 at successive stations is preferably increased to eliminate edge effects.
