Abstract

834,680. Linkwork. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. Feb. 21, 1958 [Feb. 21, 1957], No. 5955/57. Class 80 (3). A linear-motion transmitting device, particularly for an aircraft control system, comprises a circular array of three input rods 7, 8, 9 whose ends co-operate with an annular race of tapered rollers 10 in the face of a spring- loaded apertured piston 4 on the single output rod 5. The dimensions of the input rods and rollers are such that whichever rod is foremost passes through the rollers and piston and in doing so closes up the rollers so that the output rod 5 always takes up the position of the intermediate input rod. The ends of the input rods are tapered as shown at 9 in Fig. 2 so that one rod occupies the space of two rollers. As shown, rod 9 has passed through the rollers 10 and through aligned holes in the piston 4 and roller-retaining plate 11, and the end of rod 7 is in contact with two adjacent rollers 10 so that the position of the rod 5 is determined by that of the rod 7. The rod 5 may actuate an aircraft control surface, the rods 7, 8, 9 being connected to three independent servo systems so that the device acts as a safety device guarding against a run-away or a locking of any one system.
