Abstract
A catalyst used for polymerizing vinyl chloride is prepared by reacting a halide of antimony (preferably SbCl3 or SbBr3) with R1R2R3CMgX wherein R1 and R3 are hydrogen or alkyl, R2 is alkyl and X is halogen, preferably Br or Cl; the alkyl groups may be the same or different. In the example, the catalyst is prepared by interaction of equimolar quantities of magnesium isoaryl cloride and SbCl3 in anhydrous ether.ALSO:Vinyl chloride is polymerized by means of a catalyst prepared from an antimony halide, preferably SbCl3 or SbBr3, with R1R2R3CMgX, wherein R1 and R3 are hydrogen or alkyl, R2 is alkyl and X is halogen, preferably Br or Cl; the alkyl groups may be the same or different. In the example, polymerization is stated to be complete in 24 hours at 20 DEG C. or 6 hours at 50 DEG C., using a catalyst prepared by reacting, in anhydrous ether, 1 mol. of Mg isoamyl chloride with 1 mol. SbCl3.
