Abstract
In a method of making a printed circuit (see Group XXXVI), the printed conductors are formed by coating an insulating board (e.g. an epoxy laminate) with nickel by an electroless process, and subsequently depositing a conductor on to the nickel. In one embodiment, the surfaces of the board are first cleaned by sand blasting and a negative pattern of resist material is applied. The board is then immersed successively in aqueous stannous chloride and palladium chloride solutions, and then in an electroless neckel plating bath which deposits a thin film of nickel on the surface not covered by the resist, and also on the walls of holes through the board. The resist material is then removed and a layer of copper electro-deposited on to the remaining exposed portions of the nickel. The complete board is then immersed in a molten tin-lead solder bath. In an alternative embodiment, nickel is deposited on the walls of holes in a copper-clad board as a separate process, the faces of the board being masked by a resist. After removing the resist, the whole board is electroplated with copper over which a negative pattern of resist is printed leaving exposed only the areas which are to form the printed circuit. Tin-lead is plated over all the exposed surfaces, and after removing the resist, the unwanted copper is removed by etching. Specifications 712,687, 749,824 and 761,556 are referred to.
