Abstract
Mixtures of the three isomeric 1,1,6-trimethyl - 6 - hydroxyoctahydronaphthalenes are prepared by cyclization of dihydro-g -ionone, itself formed in situ by treating dihydro-a -ionone with phosphoric acid containing pyridine (preferably 2-8 per cent by weight.) The dihydro-a -ionone may itself be produced in situ by using geranyl-acetone as the starting material. Another alcohol having the formula <FORM:0813018/IV (b)/1> is also produced in yields up to 20 per cent by direct cyclisation of dihydro-a -ionone, and is eliminated from the product of the reaction by distillation. In examples: (1) dihydro-a -ionone in benzene is added to cooled 84 per cent phosphonic acid containing pyridine, the mixture stirred under nitrogen, poured into water, extracted with petroleum ether and fractionated in vacuo; the alcoholic components are separated by treatment with ethyl borate, the borate compounds decomposed with KOH and the product again fractionated, giving a mixture of the three 1,1,6-trimethyl-6-hydroxy-octahydronaphthalenes; (2) as in (1), using a higher percentage of pyridine; (3) as in (1), employing geranyl-acetone as starting material.
