Abstract
An aqueous solution suitable for phosphating ferrous and hot-dipped zinc-coated surfaces contains zinc or manganese dihydrogen phosphate, a nitrate and/or nitrite, nickel ions, and soluble silicon. The nickel may be introduced into the solution as the carbonate, nitrate chloride or sulphate, and the silicon may be derived from hydrofluosilicic acid or the silicofluoride of e.g. sodium, potassium or ammonium. The solution may also contain a metallic accelerator, e.g. copper. Hydrofluoric acid prevents precipitation in the solution and is used in the formation of concentrated make-up and replenishment solutions. The phosphated surface may be rinsed with chromic acid. U.S.A. Specification 2,197,622 is referred to.
