Abstract

810,301. Thermionic cathode contructions, materials and processing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 22, 1955 [July 22, 1954]. No. 21297/55. Class 39(1). An electrode for a fluorescent discharge lamp comprises a cup-shaped heat-insulating structure consisting of an outer cylindrical shiny metal shield 5 open at one end and lined with co-axial spaced cylindrical hollow sleeves 10 separated by projections 21, the structure being filled with a mass of wool-like fibrous steel, nickel or tungsten 11 coated with electron emissive material and electrically connected with a lead-in conductor 3. The fibrous material 11 is bonded to the conductor 3 by heating them in contact in a hydrogen furnace. A carbonate is applied to the fibrous material by dipping and reduced to oxide by inductionheating of the shield 5 during the lamp exhaust operation.
