Abstract

810,124. Track brakes. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Sept. 14, 1956 [Aug. 5, 1955], No. 22630/55. Class 103 (1). In a mine car track retarder of the kind which is fixed by the track, a frictional retarding element is resiliently urged into engagement with passing mine cars by means of an inflatable bag. The embodiment shown in Figs. 2 and 3 illustrates a framework 4 to which are secured rails 1 for mine cars. Also supported by the frame 4 is a housing formed by members 31, 39, 40 carrying a brake-shoe 17 comprising a length of channel 171 to the limbs of which is welded a plate 172. A pneumatic bag 19 is located between the plates 40 and 172 which, when expanded by compressed air supplied to inlet pipe 35, forces the brake shoe 17 towards the mine car such that the friction lining 22 attached to the brake shoe engages a mine car retarding bracket 23. When there is pressure in the pneumatic bag 19, rubber blocks 34 bonded to arms 31 yield so that the brake shoe 17 moves outwards towards the mine car retarding bracket 23 and the brake shoe 17 is retracted by means of the resilient rubber blocks 34 when the pneumatic pressure is released. The bag 19 absorbs most of the longitudinal force on the brake shoe by means of bolt 32 abutting against plate 37 so that the bag 19 is compressed longitudinally in one direction of rotation, its end plate 45 abutting against bolt 33. Should motion of the mine car be in the opposite direction bolt 43 compresses bag 19 against the bolt 42 such that very little of the longitudinal force is absorbed by rubber blocks 34. Alternative embodiments are described in the Specification wherein the resilient means for returning the brake shoe to its inoperative position comprises spring means. Another embodiment discloses a brake shoe arrangement carried by pivoted links which has a servo-action obtained by the energy of the car assisting the action of the retarder by forcing the shoe further towards the mine car.
