Abstract

819,312. Universal joints. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. May 7, 1957 [May 10, 1956], No. 14576/56. Class 80 (2). A universal joint comprises a member 5, mounted on a first shaft 1 at a location offset from the axis, having a pair of resiliently mounted shoes 8, 9 spaced apart to define a channel directed towards the axis of the shaft, the shoes engaging with a cylindrical pin 10 similarly offset from the axis of a second shaft 2. In a drive between a railway vehicle axle 2 and an electric tachometer shaft 1, the member 5 is mounted in an arm 4 attached to the shaft 1 and supports the shoes 8, 9 through synthetic rubber inserts 6, 7 bonded to the member and the shoes.
