A grinding or polishing machine comprises a working head 7 which consists of a drive motor 8 and a working spindle 10 and is tiltable about a first shaft 6 lying beneath the centre of gravity of the workhead, parallel to the working spindle, and pivotable with a second shaft 4 which is perpendicular to the shaft 6 and secured to a support 3 vertically adjustable on a pedestal 2 ; the bearing pressure of a tool 11 against a workpiece 40 is regulable by a mechanical control arrangement which is stationary in relation to the tilting movement of the working head about the shaft 4 but pivotable with the working head about the shaft 6. The shaft 4, on which is secured a forked member 5 carried by the shaft 6, has an extension supporting an arm 13 having at its outer end a threaded sleeve 14 screw-threadedly engaged by a non-rotatable rod 23 which is axially displaceable by manual rotation of the sleeve 14 by means of rods 36. An adjustable abutment 25 is mounted on the rod and engages at least one spring 27 bearing against an abutment 26 axially movable on the rod and engaging a slotted projection 28 on the working head 7. The other side of the projection bears against an abutment 29 axially movable on the rod and downwardly urged into contact with the projection by at least one spring 30 bearing against an adjustable stop 31 on the rod 23. The height of the tool 11, which may be a grinding or polishing tool, may be initially adjusted by vertical movement of the support 3 to accommodate the height of the workpiece, such as a motor bumper bar, which is mounted on a carriage 39 movable along guides 38. The bearing pressure of the tool on the workpiece is adjusted by axially displacing the rod 23, and, during operation on a curved workpiece, the head 7 pivots about the shaft 6 against the springs 27, 30. The workhead with the control mechanism may be pivoted through 90 degrees about the shaft 4 to a position with the spindle 10 vertical to enable the sides of the workpiece to be ground or polished and the stop 31 adjusted to compensate for the loss of weight of the head. Tubes 32, 33, 34, 35 prevent the entry of dust to the springs and rod 23. The machine may alternatively be arranged with the projection 28 carried by the support arm and the spring mechanism secured to the workhead.
