Abstract
The invention comprises hydantoin compounds of the general formula <FORM:0818724/IV (b)/1> (wherein R represents hydrogen or an alkyl group of not more than 4 carbon atoms), and the preparation thereof by subjecting the corresponding hydrindone-(1) of the formula <FORM:0818724/IV (b)/2> to the Bucherer hydantoin synthesis to produce the compound in which R is hydrogen, and alkylating this if desired. The products possess anticonvulsant properties. In examples: (1) 4-chlorohydrindone-(1) is warmed with ammonium carbonate and potassium cyanide in aqueous methanol to produce 4-chlorospirohydrindenyl - [1 : 51] - hydantoin: (2) the product of (1) is converted to its 31-methyl derivative by reaction with dimethyl sulphate in aqueous caustic soda. The Provisional Specification comprises compounds (analogously prepared) of the general formula <FORM:0818724/IV (b)/3> wherein R represents hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical and ring A bears at least one substituent, e.g. an alkyl (e.g. methyl or ethyl) or alkoxy (e.g. methoxy or ethoxy) radical or a halogen atom.
