Abstract

818,025. Rotary pumps and motors. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. June 11, 1957 [June 20, 1956], No. 18365/57. Class 110 (2). A rotary pump or motor of the outwardlysliding vane type having fluid-pressure loaded vanes is provided with valve means for creating a differential pressure between the fluid in the working chambers and the fluid acting on the roots of the vanes, and an actuator for operating said valve means in response to the pressure differential between the inlet and exhaust. A device comprises a rotor 19 disposed between side plates 16, 17 which are similarly ported and grooved for details of which Figs. 2, 3, 6 and 7 (not shown) should be referred to. The device also incorporates spring-loaded disc valves 21, 22 and annular disc valves 46 which contain four circumferential slots communicating with the recesses in the side plates and are resiliently attached thereto by channel-shaped springs 47, 48, screws 49 and spacers 51. Two flap valves 53 are mounted on each disc 46 to restrict the flow therethrough in one direction and to prevent it in the other direction in contra distinction to the valve 46. Operating as a motor fluid is fed to the working chambers via the valves 53 and the recesses in the side plate 16 and is discharged through the outlet 6 via the side plate 17. The valve 46 is unseated against the action of its springs 47, 48 by pistons 57 subjected to the pressure difference across the inlet and outlet conduits 5, 6 thereby permitting an unrestricted flow from exhaust ports in the plate 17 to the outlet 6. The chambers beneath the vanes are connected to the inlet and outlet conduits 5, 6, when the vanes reach the inlet and exhaust ports respectively. Between these transition positions the pressure applied to the vane chambers is reduced by the valves 21. Leakage fluid along the shaft is discharged through drain passages 15.
