Abstract
815,958. Altering physical properties. SALLE STEEL CO. Oct. 8, 1957 [Oct. 22, 1956], No. 31416/57. Class 83 (4). Working at specified temperatures.-A metallurgical process for treating hot rolled non- austenitic steel having a pearlitic structure in a matrix of free ferrite comprises heating the steel to above its transformation range while in contact with a material for diffusion transfer of elements into the surface of the steel, cooling the steel, and subsequently making a reduction in the cross-section of the steel by working the steel at a temperature within the range of 200‹ F. to the lower critical temperature for the steel composition. The diffusion transfer includes carburizing, nitriding, cyaniding and carbonitriding. After carburizing, the steel is either (1) quenched rapidly to room temperature followed by reheating to within said temperature range for the reduction step, or (2) air cooled to ambient temperature and then reheated to the required temperature for reduction, or (3) quenched or air cooled to the required temperature for reduction preferably in the range of 460‹ F. to the lower critical temperature. Prior to carrying out the diffusion transfer step the hot rolled steel is descaled. by pickling in sulphuric acid and limed to prevent rusting. Specifications 761,150 and 761,151 are referred to.
