Abstract

<PICT:0815509/IV (a)/1> In the production of regenerated cellulose filaments having a substantially circular or bean-shaped cross-section and a substantially all-skin structure, viscose made from cellulose having a degree of polymerization of at least 400 is extruded at a salt point between 6 and 15 into an aqueous coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid, zinc sulphate and sodium sulphate, the viscose containing between 0.5 and 10 per cent by weight, based on the weight of the cellulose, of a polyethylene oxide (or condensation product thereof) of average molecular weight between 300 and 10,000 and the filaments being drawn off at a speed not substantially greater than that defined by the curve shown in Fig. 1. After leaving the coagulating bath the filaments may be stretched in a hot acid bath, as described in Specification 467,500, [Group IV]. The extrusion ratio, which is defined as the ratio of the speed at which the filaments are drawn from the jet to the speed at which the viscose passes through the jet orifices, should be less than 1. In an example, viscose containing 6.0 per cent by weight of cellulose of average D.P.585, 7.0 per cent by weight of caustic soda and 3 per cent by weight, based on the cellulose, of a polyethylene oxide of average molecular weight 1000, and with a ball fall viscosity of 100 seconds, is spun at an extrusion ratio of 0.7 and at a salt figure of 9.2 into a spinning bath flowing through a tube concurrently with the filaments and containing 7.0 per cent by weight of sulphuric acid, 12 per cent by weight of zinc sulphate and 11 per cent by weight of sodium sulphate at 55 DEG C. The draw-off speed is 14 metres per minute, and the yarn is stretched 95 per cent through a second bath at 95 DEG C. containing 3.0 per cent by weight of sulphuric acid and less than 1.5 per cent by weight of total salts. After washing the yarn is dried on a heated drum, collected and subjected to physical tests, which are reported. Other examples are also given. Specifications 723,435, 739,072, 808,838 and 815,508 also are referred to.
