815,451. Burners. BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ, N. V., DE Oct. 29, 1957 [Oct. 31, 1956], No. 33741/57. Class 75(1) [Also in Group XII] The restricted throat 3 between a whirl' chamber 1 supplied tangentially with air or fuel and a combustion chamber 2 supplied with fuel or air by an axial conduit extending through the whirl chamber to the throat, is cooled by fluid supplied under pressure to a channel round its narrowest part, and a second channel round the converging part of the whirl chamber is in restricted communication with the first channel so that a slight circulation is produced in the second channel by the forced circulation in the first channel. Blades 5 in the chamber 1 increase the rotation of air or oxygen and steam, if required, fed tangentially into the chamber, and liquid fuel from an atomizer 6 is injected through the throat. A cooling channel 10 is formed in a membe 9 which constitutes the convergent end of the chamber. An annular partition 11, which does not extend the full width of channel 10, divides it into a first channel supplied with coolant under pressure through duct 12 and flow and return ducts formed within the member 9 by vertical partitions 14, 15 and a second cooling channel into which coolant leaks round the edge of partition 11 and possibly round partitions 15. The coolant in the second channel may be vaporized and the leakage round the partitions should not be sufficient to overcool preheated air or gas in the chamber 1. The apparatus may be used to produce a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen by the partial combustion of a hydrocarbon in the presence of steam.
