Abstract

In a method of obtaining in a pure state the soluble constituents of a complete organic mixture, e.g. coal-tar pitch, petroleum pitch and asphalt, a series of solutions are prepared each of which contains a plurality of constituents, individual constituents being separated from the various solutions by chromatography, electrophoresis or fractional molecular sublimation. The series of solutions may be obtained by treating the complete organic mixture with a number of solvents or a primary solution may be prepared, e.g. with pyridine as solvent, containing all or most of the soluble constituents and successive small quantities of a nonsolvent, e.g. water, are added to give a number of precipitates which are separately collected and re-dissolved to give the series of solutions. In an example a pitch was treated with 30 parts of ether saturated with water and the solution was treated with 85 per cent alcohol precipitating half of the dissolved matter. The remaining solution was chromatographed on alumina and then on silica using in each case acetone as the eluent. The third solution thereby obtained was treated with a mixture of aniline and cyclo-hexane and constituents corresponding to 1/10 th of the initial pitch collected in the aniline layer. This solution was chromatographed on alumina and each of the fractions successively collected was treated on silica using as eluents ether, cyclo-hexane, acetone, alcohol and pyridine. Among the many compounds finally obtained were chrysene, fluorene, trioxynaphthalenes, ortho- and meta-hydroxybenzoic acid, xanthene and picolinic acid.
