Abstract

800,169. Strip fastenings. FLEXIGRIP, Inc. Oct. 19, 1956, No. 31935/56. Class 44 In a container having an aperture arranged to be closed by a pair of closure strips provided respectively with at least one longitudinally extending resilient projection and with a co-operating recess whereby the strips may be resiliently locked together to close the aperture, one of the strips is provided along the whole length thereof with an engagement portion for assisting in manual separation of the strips to open the aperture. As shown in Fig. 2, a pouch 11 comprising back and front walls 13 and 14 of thermoplastic synthetic resin material are closed along the top edges by a fastener comprising a pair of overlapping strips 18, 19, of similar material secured to the top edges of the walls 13 and 14 respectively. The strips 18, 19 include web portions 18b and 19b and interengaging portions 20 and 21, the portion 21 having formed integrally therewith a flange 24 by which the strips may be pulled apart to open the pouch. The junction between the portion 21 and the flange 24 is of reduced section to permit limited flexing of the flange. In a similar construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), the flange projects outwardly from the portion 21 and then inwardly towards the strip 18. In another arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), the flange projects outwardly from and downwardly over the portion 21. In the arrangement according to Fig. 5 in which the front and back walls of the pouch are of substantially equal height, a closure strip 40 attached to the wall 13 includes a portion 43 for interlocking engagement with a portion 45 of a strip attached to the wall 14. A flange 57 extending from the portion 45 includes a locking portion 60 which engages a groove 56 on the strip 40, and is formed with serrations or ribs 61 by which the flange may be disengaged from the groove 56 prior to being used to pull the strips apart to open the pouch. In a similar arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown), the flange projects laterally from the portion 45 and terminates in an upturned portion spaced from the top of portion 43. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7, in which portions 43, and 45 of closure strips 40 and 41 depend 'from the walls of the pouch, the portion 45 is provided with an extension 67 by which the strips may be separated. In other arrangements Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) similar to that of Fig. 2, the flange 24 is replaced by a serrated surface integral with the portion 21. In another arrangement, Fig. 10 in which the overlapping closure strips 18, 19 are disposed at an angle to the front and back walls 14 and 13 of the pouch 11, a flange 73 integral with the portion 21 abuts the outer surface of the strip 18 whereby the pouch may be opened by exerting pressure laterally inwardly on the walls of the pouch in the region of the portion 20, 21 to exert a camlike action on an edge 74 of the flange 73 which is flared outwardly to effect separation of the portions 20, 21. Alternatively, the pouch may be opened by a direct pull on the flange 73.
