Abstract
809,412. Continuous - - casting - machine; making tubes and sheets; shearing. BRENNAN, J. B. June 2, 1955, No. 15823/55. Classes 83 (1), 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of continous casting, solid metal is fed into a heating zone where it is melted, the molten metal is directed on to a rotating member and thereby scattered on to annular backing means where it solidifies, and the resulting tubular deposit is progressively withdrawn. As shown, metal-bars 85 are fed into chamber 82, in which there is maintained subatmospheric pressure and/or an inert atmosphere, and pass through induction-coils 86 which melt their lower ends. High-pressure gas issuing from nozzles 88 atomizes and strips metal from said bars to deposit it on a rotating- table 72, from which it is thrown on to a wall 92 to form a tube 93 surrounding said table. The tube, as it is withdrawn by densifying- rollers 104-107, is heated on one side and cooled on the other by induction-heaters 96, 100 and cooling-jackets 98, 102. The tube may finally be cut into longitudinal strips by cutting- means 114 which consists, as shown in Fig. 4, of a grooved-roller 115 and co-operating knifeedged roller 116 biased by a spring 117 towards roller 115. Induction-coils 90 may be utilized to vaporize the metal particles prior to their deposition on wall 92. Laminates may be produced by depositing layers of metal on backing means consisting of a porous-strip of metal formed by this method, a quartz fibre-base, or paper.
