Abstract

808,696. Refrigerators. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 2, 1957 [Oct. 19, 1956], No. 30828/57. Class 29 In a refrigerator, air is forced over an evaporator cooling the freezer compartment by conduction through the walls, thence through a passage into the freezer compartment. the passage being such that the temperature of the air is raised so as to reduce the relative humidity. A domestic refrigerator has inner liners 22, 24 defining food storage and freezing compartments respectively, closed by doors 26, 28. Below the freezing compartment is a space 30 housing an evaporator 32 of which the fins are in contact with the floor of the freezing compartment. Leading from the rear of space 30 are passages 34, 38 extending across the width of the freezing compartment, passage 38 containing a fan 36 and air directing baffles 40, 42. Cold dry air from passage 38 enters the freezing compartment through ports 44. passage 52 leads from the fan to an opening 54 in the liner 22 thence circulating through the food storage compartment. Air in passage 52 is warmed by the food storage compartment and through the cabinet insulation. The position of a flap 56 covering opening 54 is determined by the action of a bellows 58 in the food storage compartment on lever 60. A channel shaped passage 48 surrounding the freezer compartment receives air from the compartment through ports 50 and from the food compartment through flexible tubes 64, and is in communication with space 30. Defrosting of the evaporator by an electric heater 92 is initiated by a time switch which also stops the fan and compressor motors. Defrost water is drained to a receptacle 131 having a dam 133. Water overflowing the dam empties to a tray 137 in the machine compartment where it is evaporated, while that remaining provides a heat seal for the space 30. The fan motor is switched off on the opening of either door.
