Abstract

Alkali-soluble condensation products are obtained (1) by heating an alkali metal alkyl xanthate with acrolein in presence of aqueous alkali, and (2) by reacting carbon disulphide with acrolein or an a -alkyl or a -aryl-substitution derivative thereof in presence of aqueous alkali, followed by subsequent heating of the acidified product. The xanthate is preferably potassium ethyl xanthate. Substituted acroleins are preferably a -methyl, a -ethyl, a -propyl, a -butyl, a -phenyl or a -tolyl acroleins.
