Abstract
805,009. Solid fuel combustion apparatus. VORKAUF, H. Nov. 25, 1955 [Dec. 6, 1954], No. 33833/55. Class 51 (1). In a boiler furnace, fuel from a hopper 3, Fig. 1, is fed by a ram 4 into a water-tube lined degasefication chamber 1 where it is coked and ignited in the presence of air passing from chambers 12 to 13. Gases emanating from the chamber 1 are forced by air discharge nozzles 14 through the chamber 13 into a chamber 17 in which the air and gases mix prior to passing horizontally through the water-tubed combustion shaft 2 to effect thereby further combustion of the fuel which has, due to continuous application of the ram, passed from the chamber 1 to the shaft 2 through a passage 7 which is also lined with water-tubes. Slag collects on a grate 5 from whence it is ejected whilst the gases from the shaft pass into a chamber 21 where secondary air is added. In lieu of using nozzles 14 suction in chamber 13 may be produced by withdrawing the gases from the chamber 1 through a box 15 from whence they are introduced into the chamber 17 by a fan which also supplies the combustion air. Grate fallings from the chamber 1 pass to the grate 5 through chamber 17, a grate-like flap 19 and a chamber 20. In a modification, the ram 4, Fig. 2, pushes the fuel upward and the degasefication gases are withdrawn from the chamber 13 into the box 15 by a fan which forces them, together with combustion air, into the chamber 17. The ram 4 may be in parts and so driven that the parts do not all press forward together. In order to optically acertain fuel level in the shaft 2, a chamber may be provided between the chamber 1 and the shaft. This chamber 24, Fig. 4, may house automatic fuel regulating means comprising a plate 25 welded to a resilient water-cooled tube 26. Fuel pressure on the plate moves the tube to eventually actuate ram interrupting means. The fuel may be delivered to the chamber 1 by screw conveyers 29, 30, 31, Fig. 5, which selectively deliver from one or other part of the width of the hopper 32. The conveyers may be driven separately or so that they are switched in at intervals until all are operating. The chamber 1 may be longitudinally sub-divided by partitions.
