Abstract

The invention comprises a method of stabilizing chlorinated hydrocarbons used for degreasing metals by adding small amounts of an epoxide and of an ester, the latter having a synergistic effect. In examples, trichlorethylene refluxed in presence of aluminium and aluminium chloride to simulate degreasing conditions is stabilized with small percentages of ethyl acetate and epichlorohydrin, and the percentage of tarry decomposition products compared with unstabilized solvent; comparison of the rate of polymer formation was also made with the same stabilizers in varying proportions. The epoxides advantageously employed have the general formula: <FORM:0799287/IV (b)/1> the carbons being part of an aliphatic chain, preferably of up to 8 carbons. Esters advantageously employed are those of low molecular weight organic acids with similar monohydric alcohols, methyl, ethyl and propyl acetates and propionates being referred to. Proportions of from 1 : 10 to 10 : 1 of the additives may be used. Perchlorethylene and tetrachlorethane are referred to as solvents requiring similar stabilization.ALSO:In the degreasing of metals (especially aluminium) with a chlorinated hydrocarbon, decomposition of the latter is inhibited by incorporating therein, as additives synergistically co-operative for this purpose, a small amount of an epoxide and of an ester. Examples describe the refluxing in the presence of aluminium and aluminium chloride, to simulate normal degreasing conditions, of trichlorethylene containing epichlorhydrin and ethyl acetate. Other materials specified are: perchlorethylene, tetrachlorethane; propylene, butylene, amylene and cyclohexene oxides; methyl and propyl acetates, methyl, ethyl and propyl propionates.
