Abstract

798,045. Moulding resin-fibre tubes &c. COMPAGNIE DE PONT-A-MOUSSON. May 2, 1956 [May 9, 1955; March 21, 1956], No. 13511/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VIII] A thermosetting resin tube having one or more tubular reinforcements of interwoven glass fibres is moulded by braiding therein forcement on an inflatable mandrel, introducing the mandrel into a centrifugal mould 12 mounted on driven rollers 13 in an oven, having heaters 16, inflating the mandrel to force the reinforcement against the mould, and removing the mandrel. The mould is then rotated to again force the reinforcement against the mould, the resin is introduced through a spout 22 into the mould, whilst its speed is reduced or stopped. An end ring 20 limits the thickness of the tube. The mould is rotated at high speed to form the tube. The fibres of the reinforcement are free to move at the points where they intersect which allows the reinforcement to be deformed without tending to return to its former shape. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the reinforcement may be made on a rigid mandrel the ends of the reinforcement being moved together to expand the reinforcement and to allow it to be removed from the mandrel. The mould may have a flared end to allow the reinforcement to be introduced easily and if desired this flared end may form a socket on the end of the tube. The reinforcement may be coated with a binder (soluble in the resin) to stiffen it, prior to its introduction into the mould.
