In a garment or like press comprising a movable head C carried by levers DD<SP>1</SP> which are pivotally mounted on stationary supports B at dd<SP>1</SP> and pivotally connected at d<SP>2</SP>d<SP>3</SP> to projections, brackets or the like cc<SP>1</SP> on the upper surface of the head C, the pivotal points d<SP>2</SP>d<SP>3</SP> and ddl are in a plane which is substantially normal to the movement of the head C for the final part of the movement of the latter as it approaches the buck A and for the initial part of the movement as it moves away therefrom, and the head C is constrained to move in the desired path when approaching or leaving the buck by radius arms FF<SP>1</SP> pivotally mounted at one end (ff<SP>1</SP>) on the stationary supports B and at the other end (f<SP>2</SP>f<SP>3</SP>) on brackets, projections or the like c<SP>3</SP>c<SP>4</SP> on the head C. The length of the radius arms F<SP>4</SP> F<SP>1</SP> is less than that of the levers DD<SP>1</SP> so that the head C is constrained to move first in an upward direction whilst remaining parallel with the buck A, and then with a swinging motion so that the distance between the front of the head and the buck becomes greater than the distance between the back of the head and the buck, thus facilitating the placing of the work on to the buck. The arms FF<SP>1</SP> and levers DD<SP>1</SP> are cranked upwardly so that they will be clear of the head during its upward movement. The levers DD<SP>1</SP> may be pivotally connected at d<SP>4</SP>d<SP>5</SP> to the piston-rod e of an hydraulic cylinder E which may be controlled by a valve as described in Specification 776,051. Alternatively the press may be manually operated. Instead of being horizontal the pressing surfaces may be at any other angle.
