Abstract

o - Cyano - carboxamides are prepared by hydrolysing in the presence of anion exchangers o : o 1-dinitriles in which at least 2 carbon atoms separate the two cyano groups. The anion exchanger is activated by a strong base before the process is commenced and may be reactivated at intervals as the activity drops off due to adsorption of by-products. The temperature may be 20-100 DEG C., depending on the stability of the exchanger, preferably 60-80 DEG C. The dinitriles may be used in aqueous emulsion or aqueous alcoholic solution, at a concentration of 15-25 per cent. The process may be carried out batch-wise or continuously, suitable apparatus for the latter being shown. Various anion exchangers are suitable, e.g. Dowex and those known under the Registered Trade Marks of "Amberlite" and "Permutit." Examples show the production of o -cyano-propionamide, -butyramide, -valeramide, -capramide and -oenanthramide.
