Abstract

789,293. Cutting and working ceramic materials. SPARCATRON, Ltd. April 9, 1954 [Nov. 14, 1952], No. 28783/52. Class 124. [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVI] Material is removed from a ceramic workpiece by producing cavitation in a liquid layer between the workpiece and a closely adjacent tool by vibrating the tool and/or the work-piece. A tool 2 vibrated ultrasonically by a magnetostrictive generator 1 and heated to 99‹C., is positioned about 2 mm. from the work-piece 3 which is immersed in water 6 at 65‹-70‹C. Instead of water a liquid containing suspended particles or a solution or emulsion containing a material of low vapour pressure and in a state of disequilibrium under the conditions of operation can be used. The process may be combined with processes involving spark discharge or electrolysis as described in Specifications 637,872 and 748,485 [Group XXXVI] respectively.
