Abstract
A process for reforming a gasoline fraction containing naphthenes and paraffins comprises subjecting it in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst at superatmospheric pressure to a reforming reaction, separating normally gaseous products from the normally liquid products, fractionally distilling the latter, and thereby separating a low boiling product fraction containing isohexanes from a higher boiling fraction, subjecting the higher boiling fraction to an extraction treatment and therein separating an aromatic hydrocarbon fraction and a raffinate largely consisting of saturated hydrocarbons including paraffins heavier than hexane, and subjecting the raffinate in a second reforming zone to reforming at a lower pressure than that in the first reforming zone. The pressure in the first zone is preferably at least 20 atmospheres and the pressure in the second zone at least 5 atmospheres lower. The initial reforming may be at a temperature of 316 DEG to 538 DEG C., a pressure of 20-68 atmospheres, with a hydrogen ratio of 0.5 to 20 mols. of hydrogen per mol. of gasoline hydrocarbon. The catalyst comprising alumina, 0.01 to 1 per cent by weight of platinum and 0.1 to 3.0 per cent of combined halogen. The extraction liquid is preferably diethylene glycol, although alcohols, glycols, aldehydes or glycerine, phenol or sulphur dioxide may be used. Specification 657,565 is referred to.
