786,704. Devices for preventing the boiling over of the contents of cooking vessels. HANSEN, H. E. March 9, 1956, No. 7474/56. Class 66. A device for preventing the boiling over of the contents of a cooking vessel comprises a perforated upper plate 3, Fig. 1, with an upstanding cowl 4 through which fluids can pass, and a lower plate 6 mounted so as to be free to rise and fall relatively to the upper plate 3, the lower plate 6 having an opening 7 beneath the cowl 4. During cooking, steam raises the lower plate 6 into contact with the upper plate 3 to close the holes 8 in the upper plate. The rising fluid escaping through the cowl 4 is trapped temporarily upon the upper plate until the weight of the cooled fluid is sufficient to press the lower plate 6 downwards, whereupon the cooled fluid returns to the cooking vessel through the holes 8 in the upper plate. The upper plate 3 may have a turned-down rimflange 10 resting on a shoulder 2 formed in the vessel 1, the bottom plate being movably housed within said rim-flange. Alternatively, Fig. 3, the bottom plate 6 is suspended on screw-studs 11 fastened to the top plate 3. The top plate 3, in Fig. 3, has a conically shaped upwardly projecting rim-flange 12 so that it may be used as a cover for cooking vessels of varying diameter.
