Abstract

785,348. Aluminium hydride; metal aluminium hydrides. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.-GES. July 12, 1955 [July 12, 1954], No. 20141/55. Class 1 (2). Metal aluminium hydrides or aluminium hydride are prepared by reacting an aluminium halide with a finely divided mixture of a metal hydride with a metal which does not react with hydrogen to form a stable hydride. The finely divided mixture may be prepared, as in Specification 777,096, by the action of hydrogen on an alloy of a hydride-forming metal and a metal which does not react with hydrogen to form a stable hydride, the alloy being in a finely divided form and substantially free from other elements. Hydrides may be CaH 2 or MgH 2 and metals, which are unaffected during the reaction, may be copper and aluminium. In the example a suspension of magnesium hydride and aluminium in ether is boiled under reflux with aluminium chloride to form AlH 3 or Mg(AlH 4 ) 2 in ether solution, which is filtered off. The magnesium chloride and aluminium powder may be separated by melting or dissolving.
