Abstract
A method of manufacturing chromium free steel from iron ores containing chromium comprises smelting the chromium containing iron ores with other iron ores in a blast furnace to produce a pig iron containing over 0.2 per cent Cr and below 0.8 per cent Mn, refining the pig by oxidation in the presence of heat absorbing oxides to decrease the chromium to below 0.1 per cent and converting the low chromium pig into chromium-free steel. The oxidation may be carried out in a ladle by blowing with air, oxygen enriched air, or oxygen, the addition of a heat absorbing oxide, e.g. mill scale, or other solid, liquid, or gaseous oxides suspended in the blowing medium, and maintaining the temperature below 1350 DEG C. so that the carbon content is not reduced to an appreciable extent. The low chromium pig iron may then be blown in a Bessemer converter to produce a chromium-free, low nitrogen steel.
