Abstract

Oil-soluble basic monovalent metal salts of organic acids are prepared by reacting an oilsoluble monovalent metal salt of an organic acid, dissolved in oil, in the presence of water and/or a water miscible oxygen containing organic liquid, with an oil-insoluble monovalent metal compound, which is formed in situ, in the reaction mixture. Suitable oil-soluble metal salts are those of sulphonic acids, especially petroleum sulphonic acids, carboxylic acids especially alkylated aromatic acids with an alkyl chain of 12 or more carbon atoms, and cycloaliphatic carboxylic acids such as petroleum naphthenic acids. Salts of organic phosphoruscontaining acids or thio-acids may be used. Suitable oils are petroleum fractions (from gasoline up to lubricating oil fractions), benzene, toluene, xylene, pentane, and heptane. Examples are given of a sodium salt from alkyl substituted salicylic acids, sodium hydroxide and carbon dioxide, and of the corresponding lithium salt. The salts may be added to fuel oils and light hydrocarbon mixtures, e.g. anticorrosion oils and gasolines and lubricating oils in minor proportions. If the salt is used as a lubricating oil additive a solvent with a low volatility and viscosity between 100 and 400 S.S.U. at 38 DEG C. is preferably used, in which case it is not necessary to remove the solvent from the final lubricating oil composition.ALSO:Oil-soluble basic monovalent metal salts of organic acids are prepared by reacting an oil-soluble monovalent metal salt of an organic acid, dissolved in oil, in the presence of water and/or a water-miscible-oxygen containing organic liquid, with an oil-insoluble monovalent metal compound, which is formed in situ, in the reaction mixture. Salts of organic phosphorus containing acids or thio-acids may be used. The oil-soluble monovalent metal salt may be formed in situ by the free organic acid being reacted with a metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate. Suitable oils are benzene, toluene, xylene, pentane, heptane and petroleum fractions. The concentration of organic salt should be 10-50 per cent by weight, and that of the water-miscible oxygen containing liquid, which should have boiling point below 140 DEG C., 5-100 per cent by weight based on the solution in an oil of the organic salt. Suitable such liquids are methanol, acetone, diisopropyl ether, monoethyl glycol ethers, 1,3-dioxane, and ethyl acetate. Examples are given describing preparation of a sodium salt from alkyl substituted salicylic acids, sodium hydroxide and carbon dioxide in the presence of methanol and dissolved in xylene, and of a lithium salt, using lithium hydroxide.
