Abstract
773,394. Magnets. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 26, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 29510/53. Class 35. [Also in Group XL (a)] A magnetic focusing device for a travelling wave tube comprises a cylindrical permanent magnet 6, Fig. 1, of which the wall tapers in thickness from a maximum at the centre to minima at its ends, surrounding a magnetic sleeve 7 which is saturated by the field of magnet 6, so that the magnetic field is uniform along the beam path and falls abruptly at each end. Cylinder 7 is saturated at or below the minimum field strength used. The focusing device may be designed for rectilinear electron flow or for arrangements in which the gun converges the beam down to a small diameter before the magnetic field is applied, such as in Brillouin type flow. The slight increase of magnetic field at the centre is eliminated by grinding away a small portion of the inner wall of the magnet at the centre thereof. Cylindrical shell 7 of saturable magnetic material makes the field still more uniform along the length of the delay line and also makes the field accurately axial. In a modification, the permanent magnet may be of tapered outer diameter, Fig. 4 (not shown). Tube envelope 2 is of ceramic material or of non-magnetic metal, and the gun electrode terminals are at the left-hand end while the input and output coupling devices, which may be coaxial lines as shown, or waveguides, are taken to terminals at the right-hand end. The helix 9 may be supported by a ceramic tube, or preferably by insulating rods 14, carried by magnetic shields 10, 11 and matching transformers 12, 13. The helix may be bonded to its support rods, and the helix assembly may be coated over the half nearer the input, or any other desired portion, with lossy material such as colloidal graphite.
